Assessment Tools

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

What is an assessment inventory?

An assessment inventory is a test or questionnaire that organizes information from multiple sources relating to a specific topic. They are based on extensive research and data collection against which your client’s answers or scores are measured.

How can an assessment inventory help me as a counsellor?

An assessment inventory can help your client to better understand themselves and how their interests, preferences, aptitudes, values or dispositions might relate to specific occupations. These results can assist you in moving the client forward through a better understanding of themselves.

Assessment tools should be used in a descriptive versus a prescriptive way. In other words, use the results to initiate conversations with the client regarding exploration. The results should not be used to tell a client what occupation they should choose.

Certain assessments are available only to users who have appropriate training and credentials, and who adhere to the principals of proper use, including knowledge of assessments and their applications.
